3rd & 4th Shot Strategy Drill Session with Renee | Intermediate-High IntermediateFor players ready to advance their pickleball strategy, this drill session focuses on the 3rd and 4th shot provides the foundational skills needed to move from a defensive to an offensive position. Mastery of these two shots is the key to winning points and dominating the kitchen.
The 3rd shot: Taking control of the rally
After the serve and return, the serving team is at a disadvantage, stuck at the baseline while the receiving team advances to the non-volley zone (NVZ). The third shot is your opportunity to neutralize this situation and get to the net.
Third Shot Drop: The primary focus will be on the drop shot—a soft, controlled shot that lands just over the net and forces your opponent to hit the ball up.
Technique: Proper paddle movement, grip pressure, and contact point to ensure the ball lands softly in the kitchen.
Placement: How to aim your shot or the opponent's feet to make their return as difficult as possible.
Decision-making: When to execute a drop shot versus a drive, based on your opponent's return and your court position.
The 4th shot: Defending and counter-attacking
The 4th shot is the receiving team's response to the serving team's 3rd shot. The goal is to either maintain a dominant position at the kitchen line or create an attackable ball.
Reacting to a drop: Learn to respond to a well-placed 3rd shot drop with resets, dinks, or controlled volleys that keep the rally neutral.
Neutralizing a drive: Develop a solid block to absorb the pace from a hard-hit 3rd shot drive and aim your return at your opponent's feet, keeping them pinned to the backcourt.
Attacking high balls: Practice taking advantage of high 3rd shots by executing controlled overheads or aggressive roll volleys to win the point outright.
Who is this drill session for?
This drill session is ideal for intermediate players (3.0 - 3.75 skill level) looking to move up to the next level. If you find yourself popping up shots from the baseline or giving up the kitchen too easily, this clinic will give you the strategies and techniques to correct those mistakes and start winning more points.
